Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra - Mahler: Symphony No. 9
I have lost touch with the world

Gustav Mahler began work on the gigantic 9th symphony in 1908 at the very time when he began his first season as director of the New York Philharmonic.  The next year he took on directorship of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.  Although he had been warned repeatedly by his doctors that his frenetic work schedule could easily kill him, his temperament would not allow him to follow such advice.  Before the end of his second season in New York, he collapsed.  He conducted his last concert there in February of 1911, thereupon returning to Vienna where he died in May.  This last completed symphony of Mahler confronts death with a certain grim determination while at the same time expressing utter emotional exhaustion.  This performance is the seventh in the Mahler symphony cycle which has occupied the orchestra for the past decade.
