Fake news and hacked emails became  the dominant stories of the 2016 US presidential election. This talk will offer insights into the appeal of fake news, explain why such messages are shared and go viral, and the impact of the Russian disinformation campaign.  The talk will also discuss whether or not the Russian efforts influenced the outcome of the election and then offer suggestions as to how best to counter VD (Viral Deception).
